Road Trip - Day #2

Woke up bright and early with a couple of bright smiles in our faces. This big adventure is actually reality! We had spent Night #1 with our good friend, and Kameron's groomsman, Tyler. In the morning, he saw us off as we drove only an hour to our next pitstop.

It was nice to be back in Orange City (for a few hours anyway). As we pulled into town with our car loaded, it seemed possible that we were moving back for another year at Northwestern. Glad to be moving on to a new stage of life & a new adventure with Hubby. The very first stop made in the OC was of course, the Dutch Bakery. Oh how we have missed Loren's delicious treats. We were immediately reminded of late night donut runs with friends or simply with each other, playing games, or on the rare occasion, studying diligently. Will we find a spot like that in Newark? We'll soon find out.

The rest of the morning was spent on campus with precious friends at NWC, sipping coffee, sitting&talking, and eating in the newly remodeled caf (thanks to our friend the food service manager). The familiar faces, smiles & laughs made it that much harder to press on towards a destination that held anything but familiar faces.

We got to Des Moines just in time to meet a couple of great college friends for burgers. The restaurant Zombie Burgers is one I would recommend to anyone to try at least once just for the experience. Rude waiter. Odd burger combinations. Crazy milkshake flavors. And unique zombie theme. -- not to mention a killer bellyache that'll turn you into a zombie. Don't order the "They're Coming to Get You Barbara." 2 grilled cheese sandwiches as the bun of a cheeseburger with onions, bacon, & zombie sauce = too much cheese and grease for this belly to handle.

To walk off the calories from dinner, we headed to the sculpture garden downtown. I love locations like this -- I would have loved it even more if I had felt less zombie and more human. Dozens of unique sculptures, worth who knows how much, in a great location, with families taking pictures, a fitness group running an intense circuit, and young intellects reading on the grass. Perfection.

Day #3 will be spent on the road to Chicago where we will hopefully camp for a couple days. We have been listening to audiobooks & podcasts in the car. Our favorites are Radiolab, This American Life, and the Moth. What podcasts are your favorites? We want to know.
