Going Green: Ziploc Bags

In America the term "disposable" is used to much. We throw sooo many things away, filling up our trash cans with plastic that can be reused. I could give endless examples of "trash" that should be reused before pitching it and buying new ones. Instead... I will just focus on Ziploc bags.

How many Ziploc bags to we go through in a single week? Lots. Do you reuse the bags? or throw them away?

A habit that I got into while in Zimbabwe is washing used Ziploc bags and using them again & again & again.  My Zimbabwean friends challenged me to be more conscious of the resources I have. In a country where resources are scare, they use what they have because they can't afford to buy more. Why would a family need to buy another box of Ziploc bags, when the first box contains enough bags to reuse over and again. And why not? They have resealable zippers, isn't that what they are made for? to be resealed and reused?

We want to challenge you this month to think twice before tossing your Ziploc bag into the trash. Instead add it to your stack of dishes, turn it inside-out, give it a good wash, and save it for tomorrow's pb&j. The earth will thank you, and so will your wallets.
